Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a proud art teacher in a Title l elementary school. My school has a diverse ethnic population consisting of African American, White, Spanish, Brazilian and Asian students. We have a large ESOL and ESE population as well. I teach 700 students from PK-5th grade who are on free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch. I also teach an autistic cluster of 32 students who are mainstreamed with other general education classes for art. I'm lacking in school supplies and am dependent on fundraisers, donations and grants. I teach my students about famous artists, art history and incorporate multicultural projects. I teach across the curriculum incorporating common core and technology infused lessons through the arts. My students participate in many community art shows and have won numerous awards. Each year we participate in Art from the Heart~ Projects with a Purpose and give back through humanitarian and community service based art projects. They learn character traits and leadership skills.
My Project
My goal is through the visual arts and performance to have my students spread the message of "Peace."
I am in need of a White Butterfly Bench to be used as a display and part of a visual performance in our garden.
I have chosen a song, "Let There Be Peace on Earth"- Song by Harry Connick Jr. for my students to perform. They will select and perform other "Peace" related songs that have meaning. Students may create dances and collaborate with the music teacher and use the recorder to perform other songs in the garden.
I will also have my students write messages of peace and kindness on rocks to reinforce this concept to make it a permanent display with the bench. I will have students choose where they want to place their rocks with the colorful bench I have requested. The bench will add color and create a positive space for artistic expression. It will also be used for my students to sketch and draw and be creative.
