My Students

Middle school can be one of the most challenging times of our lives. I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to help middle school students learn and grow every day. Our school services a high poverty population. Our enrollment consists of about nine hundred thirty students, ranging from 6th to 8th grades, with a 50% free/reduced-price lunch rate.

My students have historically scored below average in reading on district benchmarks and state standardized assessments.

Because of this, they are enrolled in a program that focuses on reading comprehension.

My Project

The lap desks I am requesting will be used daily during my students' independent work rotations. My students are struggling readers who come to me for 2 periods each day to receive reading intervention.

My classroom is set up to make my students feel comfortable and safe, which includes a comfy area where they can complete their independent reading and project work without the confines of a desk.

I was fortunate enough last year to receive a few iPads so that the students could listen to audio books, read electronic books, and complete independent project assignments. Because I did not have lap desks, I was asked to make sure all students who were using the iPads were sitting at a desk.

The program I use for my reading interventions has done a great deal of research on the best environment for reading instruction. A large amount of that research shows that when students are comfortable and feel free to move about a classroom, they can focus more easily on reading. Since reading is the area that my students struggle with, I want to give them every advantage I can. If they have lap desks that can hold their iPads, they are now free to complete their independent work wherever they feel most comfortable in the classroom.
