Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our school serves students from the Kindergarten level to the Fifth Grade. We service students with special needs as well as students who are learning English as a second language. Our total is about 633 students in all. Our school is located in a impoverished, urban neighborhood where many of our students face adult-sized struggles everyday. Despite their challenges, our students are vibrant and excited to learn new things. As we say every morning, WE ARE SOMEBODY!

The art room is a place where all students are considered successful.

We love art at our school, we just need some help with supplies. The arts do not always receive proper funding or attention when the budget is created. Because of this, it has become a part of my job to reach out to the community and beyond for assistance!

Art helps our students through tough situations, helps them become better problem-solvers, powerful thinkers, and well-rounded individuals. Art is something ANY student can do, no matter their academic standing or personal struggle.

My Project

I would like to introduce a new medium that will be fun to experiment with and will stand up to being used by over 600 students a week.

Tempera cakes are great for satisfying the want to paint, while being easy to clean up and reuse again and again!

With these cakes, we can easily add water to the dry paint (similar to watercolor), use what we need, and then let them dry out for the next person to do the same. There is no need to pour or pump out paint! Plus, we do not need to worry about washing palettes and letting valuable paint get washed down the drain!

The possibilities of what we can create with tempera cakes are endless and very exciting.
