Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse group of Spanish learners from a rapidly growing community in west Texas. Some students are eager to learn and use Spanish, and some students are very nervous and embarrassed. Some students speak Spanish at home with their family, and some students' exposure to the language has only been in a classroom setting.
My students are up to the challenge of improving their Spanish skills, be in writing, reading, or conversation.
The community we create while learning a new language helps us appreciate and understand different cultures and perspectives.
My Project
Nothing motivates a person like a good story. I want to give my students access to compelling stories that are written for their age and language ability.
Did you know most children's books are written for someone who has been speaking the language for several years?
My students have only just begun on their language journey and cannot access the language written in children's books. However, their ability to access the language does not take away from the fact they want to read a good story!
Spanish leveled readers are written for students learning Spanish. They use a limited amount of words, all the while telling a story young adults want to continue reading. Help me put a good book into the hands of a reader.
