Help me give my students a book for Read Across America Day. At our school, we are doing a school-wide initiative to support literacy and reading. All students are challenged to read a book in a day.
Hello! I am a special education teacher. The school is located in Conway, SC (near Myrtle Beach) and is part of Horry County Schools (HCS). We are located near the center of a small city, but the students live in suburban, urban, and rural communities.
My students are from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and demographics.
They are all identified as special needs. This varies from learning disabled to autism to hearing impaired. They are unique and very special. 75% of the students are reading below grade-level. However, they work hard every day, despite their obstacles.
Many of the students have processing and reading impairments. They need more exposure into the wonderful and creative world of literature!
My Project
At our school, we are doing a school-wide initiative to support literacy and reading. All students are challenged to read a book in a day.
This is the first year we are doing this program.
Students and teachers will be reading the book, "Fish in a Tree," by Lynda Mullaly Hunt.
However, our school can only afford to purchase a book for each teacher. This means students will have to go from class to class and read the book being projected on the screen.
I would love to be able to purchase a book for every student, especially those with special needs. Please help me to raise funds to purchase books for each student in my organizational class. This would mean so much to them if they had an actual paperback book to read and own.
