Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The third grade students in my classroom are truly unique individuals. All of them are English language learners living in a low income neighborhood but they are eager to learn and showcase their knowledge in various ways..
The 22 students in my class all speak two languages, Spanish and English, love learning Shel Silverstein poems and reciting them, and enjoy learning about different parts of the world!
They are truly interested in learning English, becoming better readers, and succeeding in school and in life. They are eager and curious about many things.
My Project
All of my students enjoy reading and sharing their reading with their classmates and with me. While I have many books in my classroom library, a lot of the books are worn out and old. In prior years, this wasn't a huge concern as our school had a full time librarian and a library full of wonderful, fun, and contemporary children's books from which our students could choose books every week. However, this year, we do not have a librarian so the library has been closed off for our students' use, thus closing off access to thousands of books.
My project is to add more contemporary and relevant books such as biographies of famous men and women of color, books whose main characters look like my students, and popular series books such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants, and Bad Kitty to my classroom library.
Being able to provide access to these types of books will help my students stay engaged during independent reading time and make them eager to continue reading all year long.
