Our school community is in one of the roughest areas in an inner city in Connecticut. All of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch and are living at a below poverty level. The vast majority of them live in non-traditional homes, and many deal with homelessness and constant displacement. Some of my students have had parents or other close relatives in jail for a variety of issues. They are often confined to their homes due to the unsafe neighborhood in which they live.
Despite such hardships, all of our students do what they can to attend school every day and learn the best they can.
Even the children who act extremely tough on the outside swell with pride when they master something new in our classroom. Our school is their safe place and each of us work extremely hard to provide our students with as many opportunities to learn as possible so they can recognize their strengths and the endless possibilities in their future.
My students have limited time outside for play. Their neighborhood is unsafe and for many, the only time they are outside is during recess. I would love for them to have different things to play with during our outdoor recess.
After working so hard in the classroom, I'd love for my students to be able to have some fun during their down time!
This pack of supplies will allow for students to remain active during recess whether they decide to do an individual activity or play on a team sport. They will be able to expend their energy so they can refocus once back in the classroom.
