My school, in The Palo Alto Unified School District, serves a little under 500 diverse children in grades K-5. Our students speak many languages, have a plethora of special abilities and needs, and all come to our school to learn and grow in a safe and welcoming environment. Our school is unique in that we serve students from many communities and walks of life: Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, and The Ronald McDonald House at The Lucille Packard Children's Hospital.
My Project
This particular project will provide alternative thinking and working stations for kiddos who have a tough time sitting at traditional school tables, desks, and chairs. I am seeking funding to provide my students with 12 adjustable lap top and writing tables that will allow them to stand while working. These standing desk converters will provide the opportunity for students to move their bodies while thinking, reading, writing, and working.
Everyone knows that sitting all day long is not good for the body.
Study after study has found that sitting for most of the day can be detrimental to our physical health. What's not good for the body is also not good for the mind. No one, especially growing children, should be forced to sit for prolonged periods for time. These portable desk converters will be available to students throughout the entire school day. They will be able to access them at anytime. The 12 items will be kept in a space where students can easily walk over to them, prop them up on a table top, and work on their math, writing, social studies, science, and even reading during the school day while standing up. Students will even be able to prop them up next to each other to collaborate while standing. A 2015 study published in Experimental Psychology found that most children are spending nearly 60% of their waking day sedentary. These portable desk converters will help me combat this issue in my classroom by allowing my students to freely stand and move while learning in class.
In addition to helping my students, I will offer to share these standing desk converters with my teaching colleagues for their kiddos who may need a little movement space to learn.
