Fred Babb, a noted arts advocate once stated, "Art is a place kids travel to where they feel good about themselves, keep their passports current." I intend to keep this sense of "travel" alive in my students through personal art experiences.
My students are in a high poverty, rural area of North Carolina.
Our school currently has approximately 490 students in second and third grade. More than 40% of our students receive free and reduced lunch and our school is considered Title I. Title I represents schools with a large number of economically disadvantaged students. My students learn best with vivid experiences at school since many times there are limited resources outside of school.
My Project
My students will use crayons, colored pencils, markers, paper, poster board, tag board, and other materials to create unique artworks. We will create art that represents integration of math, science, reading and social studies. My students will learn about diverse cultures and visual expression as well as how to safely and appropriately use a variety of art materials.
With the main focus on reading and math, art often gets overlooked.
My students need materials to express their learning. By integrating art with other subjects, my students will expand their knowledge beyond textbooks and pencils. The art materials I am requesting will foster creative thinking and an appreciation of art. This will make my students lifelong learners that can experience and appreciate art for years to come!
