My classroom is filled with a diverse group of energetic 5th graders in a Title I school. Many of my students come from bilingual homes. Our school provides free breakfast and lunch to its students.
My students are curious and motivated to find ways to help them learn.
They strive to find what works best for them so that they can be successful in the classroom, whether it is a different learning strategy or a seating arrangement. Together we are working towards mastering the skill of perseverance and one of our class mottoes is "I can't do this yet!" Everyday, I try to inspire my students to celebrate their growth in learning and their achievements.
My Project
My classroom has a handful of flexible seating options, which are quickly scooped up each morning. These cantilever seats and small stools will allow me to give my students additional seating options in the classroom.
Students like being able to choose their seat.
When they are comfortable they are more likely to be on task and learning. Because these seats are light, durable and easy to clean, they will last for years in the classroom. Additionally, students will be able to quickly rearrange them or move them to a place where they feel most comfortable.
My classroom is a Project Based Learning classroom. Part of PBL is the ability for students to take ownership of their classroom and their learning. Flexible seating allows students to create the spaces in the classroom where they can have choice in how they learn. Furniture like this lasts for several years, so donations to this project will impact my classroom for years to come.
