Even as some of the littlest learners in an International Baccalaureate program, my kiddos are thinkers, inquirers, and communicators... just to name a few. They work hard, do their best, dream big, and ask questions - SO MANY QUESTIONS!
With all of their hard work, comes the need to PLAY hard!
Play is such an important part of a child's development - socially, emotionally, and academically. Luckily, my kids and their need to play is honored at our school and it is easy to see how my students benefit from this.
My Project
My students are so lucky to be at a campus that understands the value of play and provides the time for them to play. We have designated free play time built into our schedules. My students need new materials to keep them engaged in purposeful play as they continue to develop socially, emotionally, and academically.
Purposeful play helps students to develop crucial executive functioning skills.
Students must be able to communicate, collaborate, and cooperate during many of the different stages of play. By allowing students the time and providing them with fun and engaging materials to play with, they are able to build life long skills. Purposeful play is so important, especially in the primary years. With many of these materials, students will be able to flex their creativity and stretch their imagination to build anything their mind designs and to work together through playing games. They will be able to collaborate with each other and to learn by trial and error. Using some of these materials will encourage them to take risks and to try new things. These new materials will help to keep my kids engaged in building, creating, and game play that will help them to construct their own knowledge and understanding - all under the guise of play! Materials like Fiddlestix and Magna-Tiles will give them an open world to create in, while games like Hi Ho! Cherry-O and Rush Hour will allow them to play together and practice skills like cooperation and following directions. Dollhouse accessories and play food items encourage social play and provide so many opportunities for kids to use their imaginations and express themselves.
