As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. My classes are composed of 7 special needs and 11 English learners. In the past three weeks, two new English learners have entered our classroom.
Disengagement has become an extremely common occurrence across our school district.
Their learning barriers and levels affect their learning and cause disengagement. Across all grade levels - elementary, to middle school, to high school, it has become harder and harder to get children to school regularly. I have had students that have missed over 85% of the school year. There are many different reasons for their absences - home lives, taking care of siblings, and so much more. In our school, we also have a very large population of ELL students and students with special needs.
Despite these challenges, I wish to create the best possible learning environment.
My Project
My students do a lot of projects in science. They also do research and have to present their findings to their classmates. We are currently creating digital stories on topics that interest them and keep them wanting to learn more. This will help all students feel like they are part of the learning process.
They need to be able to tell and share their stories to their peers in creative and innovative ways.
This will ensure that every student is engaged in learning.
I need a projector, a Chromebook, a printer and a document camera so that they can project and present their projects to each other.
