Our school is in a high poverty area of a large urban school district. Our school, in particular, is almost 50% ESOL population. We service students from 36 different countries. The school is a kindergarten through 8th-grade school. The students try very hard to do their best with limited English proficiency. For the most part, they pick up the English language pretty quickly. The teachers in our school do their best to assist all students.
Our team does a great job supporting these students, even though we face a variety of challenges each day.
Even with challenges in our classrooms such as extreme heat or cold, lack of supplies, overcrowded classrooms, etc., we endure and do our best to provide quality experiences and learning to our students. When we have the generosity of others who help us, like you, It makes working in our rooms a little easier.
My Project
We are working, learning and teaching in a new dimension of schooling. Teachers and students are now working remotely in a new venue of schools. We have been trying to figure out how we can convey learning in the most positive experience possible. The ESL Library will give me practice support for my students and the books will allow me to read to them so they are HEARING, reading writing and speaking. All the things we work on for ESL classes.
My students need support during this time vs learning in a traditional manner.
I have been reading books to them online and created a youtube channel. I have created an online reading classroom so they can read themselves and answer questions. I will be able to use the subscription to the online ESL library to send them more supportive work for everyday topics such as having a conversation at the grocery store. This will round out the learning experience for them.
