Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is made up of 20 amazing learners. They come to class ready to learn despite the obstacles they face prior to stepping foot in the classroom.
We are a Title I school and almost all of my students are English language learners.
My students love coming to school because I make learning fun. My students work hard each and every day. Unfortunately, they need supplies that I can’t provide on my own. This includes games and materials to improve reading comprehension.
My Project
Diane Ackerman said, "Play is our brain's favorite way of learning." I believe that one of the best ways to engage students is through play!
I'm requesting games and materials to help improve listening and reading comprehension.
Fun and challenging board games that foster reading comprehension will keep my students engaged, boost their reading comprehension skills, and give them the opportunity to practice social skills such as turn taking.
I am especially excited to try the "Extra! Extra! Informational Text" game. Children will read and answer questions about informational text to progress throughout the neighborhood and deliver their newspapers! This game develops skills in reading informational text, identifying the main topic, determining the meaning of words and phrases, and recognizing and using text features. These are skills that my students need significant support with.
I've also included cards that have short stories on them. Students have to listen to the story and be able to answer questions based on what they heard. This daily practice will really help my English Language Learners with their listening comprehension.
I am confident that regular use of these materials in conjunction with direct reading instruction will enhance my students' listening and reading comprehension making them BETTER READERS!!! They will also be building their love of reading!
