My Students

Like all students, my 7th and 8th graders have their preferred learning styles for completing classroom assignments. Some prefer to work independently, while others choose to work with a partner or a group of their peers. However, the one activity they all agree on is playing games.

My students love to learn new objectives, practice their skills, and review for tests by playing board games.

My students practice spelling and vocabulary when they play Scrabble, practice drawing conclusions and making inferences when they play Clue, and review parts of speech and grammar when they play Jeopardy. In her blog post, Rebekah Stathakis states, "Games grab students' attention and actively engage them." My goal for my students is that are actively engaged while learning the ELAR content, have positive memories of their learning, and become life long learners.

My Project

As a 7th and 8th grader, reading is necessary in all subjects. Today's students will read about the past in history classes, investigate and inquire in science, and solve word problems in math. The main idea, cause, effect, and drawing conclusions are vital skills for success in ELAR, history, science, and even math.

The Can Do Reading Games and Reading Comprehension Games Library will reinforce my students' reading comprehension skills.

Playing board games also helps with social and communication skills. These games encourage face-to-face interaction which brings students closer together. Board games strengthen creativity and self confidence. Board games are beneficial and fun!
