As my students and I like to refer to it, our classroom is a mini United Nations. My student population represents 16 countries with over 11 different languages spoken in my classroom. Apart from the linguistic and cultural diversity, the is also great diversity in the English language proficiency of the students.
One of the huge language gaps most of my students share is in the area of vocabulary and reading skills, both of which are essential aspects of learning English.
Learning another language can be both frustrating and challenging for many of my students.
As their teacher, I must help them succeed by having, at my disposal, many instructional tools to help them engage in class and not just endure it.
My Project
Most of my students find the English grammar challenging and will usually shy away from engaging in it because they are afraid to get it ‘wrong’. Having language games such a Bingo in my classroom will help alleviate this anxiety and create an environment which is more collaborative and therefore less intimidating.
Much as they are not yet proficient in English, they are constantly exposed to it as they play electronic games therefore, using games to teach language will provide them with an already familiar environment.
Another benefit of using games to teach language in my classroom is that the students will be less anxious as they interact with peers in a collaborative environment. The competitive aspect of some of the games will also provide them with much needed practice in the speaking domain of language.
