In my special education classroom, I provide resource time and instructional time to support various needs. The students range in ability and level of engagement, but they all like to connect with each other.
I have discovered that it is much easier to get my kids to engage with math problems and language skills when it is incorporated in a game format.
Using games, I can get my kids engaged and keep them engaged.
We have played Life to improve counting money and making change. I also incorporate games like math baseball, equation memory, and addition war to hone my students' basic math skills. I believe that teaching math or language through interactive games can keep a student's attention and change their outlook on learning.
My Project
Getting students to engage in challenging material can be a struggle. However, when I introduced games that worked on the same concepts, my students flourished.
Being in special education, some of my students have a hard time processing information.
They don't always comprehend when given information orally. The OSMO application games can help them to understand the information through fun activities like giving back change after making a pizza. These games also give them real-life experience for a job they might obtain one day.
If I were to get the applications and accessories from this proposal, I would be able to offer exploration of content through different academic based games. They would be able to build their confidence in the subject that they were working on and get to feel successful.
I also added some award-winning book titles to my project so that students who were done with their task could read independently while others finished. When I first met my students, they hated reading. It was hard and confusing for them. Now, after we have done a few read alouds, they are yearning to read more independently. With these titles, my students will build their confidence in reading and fluency.
