Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Every child is a different flower and together they make a beautiful garden." My students are bright, hardworking and inquisitive. Many face hardships such as poverty, abuse and absence of parents but they are taught to persevere and have begun to realize that if they do not give up that they are capable of great things. I am in awe of their willingness to continue working to their potential and for that reason, I love teaching them and seeing growth. Covid has really been hard on these students. The last time they were in a classroom fulltime was when they were in 5th grade. They are struggling with Fractions, Decimals and Percents. Before, I can introduce them to the pre-algebra skills I have needed to work on those skills that they missed due to online learning.
My Project
The TI-15 calculator is amazing. The calculator has a numerator and denominator buttons for students to put in the numerator and the denominator and it will looks like a fraction in the calculator window. Most calculators do not have this capability. For example, a students can put in a large fractions such as 42/48. It has a "simp" button for simplifying fractions that the student can hit that will show them the first simplification. This process can be repeated until the fraction has been completely simplified.
Another feature it has that I love is the toggle between fractions and decimal button.
With this toggle button I can start showing students how the magnitude of the number affects decimals.
