Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are curious, intelligent, and incredibly active. This is my second year with this class and to say that they are like my children would be an understatement. While we would all love to believe that our students are all learning together in a quiet space, that’s not our reality. I work in a low income, primarily immigrant area of New York City. Our school goes above and beyond to educate our students for the world waiting for them. To allow them to tap into their most creative, curious selves. They are advocates for themselves and others. They are artistic and knowledgeable on the arts beyond their years. We immurse them In a culture of classical music, art work and lyric studies from music from all ages and genres. While my students are engaged, they are active. My goal is to create a warm, inviting environment for my students with flexible seating. I want each and every one of my students to have a space to learn in that allows them the opportunity to be focused, engaged, and most of all comfortable. ALL students deserve a space to learn and grow no matter their differences.
My Project
My students are explorative, inquisitive, and active beyond belief! These are the same students that I had in first grade and after noticing their need for movement, I decided to try out flexible seating in my classroom. My students would be forever grateful to have options such as stools in their seating, to be able to change their direct environment each day to find their most suitable learning environment.
These small additions of stools to my classroom will make a world of difference to each of my students in a unique and special way.
It will give them the opportunity to engage while seeking comfort. We all learn in different and wonderful ways, it's time to embrace that in more than just our curriculum, but in the environment, we are creating for them to learn in.
My hope is that these additions to my classroom will allow my students to find a level of engagement and comfortability that they may not have experienced in school before, aside from laying on the floor with me in small group work. To those who think about donating and those who do, thank you for helping me change the lives of so many of these young learners who will be our future.
