Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently work in a diverse city where I see children from all different backgrounds, who speak different languages, practice a variety of religions, and have an array of home lives. My students are primarily Spanish speaking and African American and live at or below the poverty line.
The students in my classroom come from all different areas of Paterson.
In Paterson, parents can choose where to send their children to preschool, it is not based on where you live. My classroom is a melting pot representation of the city of Paterson as a whole. There are different religions, languages, and ethnicity. The students get to be exposed to different sights and sounds that they may not see every day in their own neighborhoods.
My Project
My students love to draw, paint, make sculptures to paint and keep for our 3-D art. My students are creative and not wasteful with materials, the materials just end up being used so quickly and I hate to deny them the opportunity to express themselves through art because of a lack of materials.
I want my students to choose whatever medium for art that they want, paint, markers, and clay, especially when we are doing lessons on Basquiat, Pollack, and Picasso.
I want them to use mixed mediums and to be as creative as possible while learning about different forms of art.
I want the borders around the 9 bulletin boards in my class to touch on the themes they are representing, such as Student of the Month, Art, our "what do we know, what do we want to know, what did we learn" board, music, reading, kindness, and information for the parents. The borders will be new and not have holes and tears and will reflect the artwork they are creating and work they are doing properly.
