My students are brilliant, caring, inquisitive, and active fifth graders. They are perfect in every way. Even though they have been diagnosed with learning disabilities, they work harder than anyone else and deserve the very best.
They push each other to reach goals that may seem impossible to reach.
They take pride in their work and don't want to be seen as "different." They've earned every milestone they have reached.
I teach at a rural, low-socioeconomic public school in Louisiana with 100% free lunch and breakfast.
I am a 20-year educator who works with 5th grade students with learning disabilities. It is important that children with special needs work in their least restrictive environment to help them meet academic goals, as well as foster social skills and independence. While my students are a part of the special education population, they don't go to a special education classroom. Instead, they are with their peers in the regular classroom setting. The items requested in this project will build a mobile cart that I will take into their regular education classrooms. I will form small groups and individual lessons to help them grow into lifelong learners. In addition to the cart, I've requested a laptop charging station. This will allow me to bring computers to the students so that they have ownership of their work as they learn independence and complete computer-based curricula. Floor pillows will help me to create a comfortable reading corner wherever I go. Also listed are several math manipulatives for hands-on activities for my visual and kinesthetic learners. I've also requested some office supplies (stapler, hole punch, etc.) to help organize the never-ending paperwork that comes with loving these children.
