Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
95% of the school is Hispanic and many are English language learners. Reading is a great opportunity for them to expanded their English vocabulary in a nonthreatening setting. In addition to overcoming the obstacle of reading in a second language, many of the students come from low income homes and cannot afford additional learning materials. Our school is 100% free lunch this year. Although these middle schoolers face many struggles, they crave to succeed in school. Students want to stay after school in the library instead of going home. My goal is to create a safe haven that promotes well-read, successful adolescents.
My Project
It is the beginning of the school year and my 7th and 8th graders are eager to get reading for their annual competition. The Battle of the Books team is required to read twenty-one newly released titles and prepare themselves for a trivia contest against other Chicago schools.
In order to prepare my students For Battle of the Books we need to have all twenty-one titles readily available.
Therefore I am asking for help in purchasing the list of titles. Books vary across genre, reading level and interest.
After the book club uses these titles to prepare for their trivia competition they will be placed in the school library for all students to check out for years to come.
