Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 8th grade English classroom is a place of challenge and exploration. These students spend 8th grade learning about themselves as learners and individuals as well as the world around them, while engaging with a rigorous Language Arts curriculum.

My students are 8th graders in an urban Connecticut middle school with over 1,000 students who come from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds.

Many of these students are new residents of our city, while others are new to the country in addition to our school. As a result, these students have difficulties learning and becoming proficient in the English language. All of my students are ready to change the world but need our help in understanding how they, in particular, can best do so. Even students who come to 8th grade speaking and reading English need our help understanding this!

My Project

Independent reading is a crucial aspect of learning English Language Arts skills. In fact, reading just 20 minutes a day exposes students to 1.8 million words a year! A classroom library with appealing and relevant books that students can read at home is necessary to encourage my students to read and learn.

This display will help students to see the books that are available to read.

Many of my oversized books are placed in various bins, many of which are opaque. Using these bins can be cumbersome and deter students from reading some of the engaging and interesting books available in the classroom.
