As the gifted teacher for grades K-5, I serve some of the most creative, fun-loving and curious students in the school. We are a Title I School and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most of my students struggle to pay for the activities that students in the gifted programs at other schools in our system get to participate in.
My students are excited to come to me once a week for a whole day to participate in fun, hands-on activities and learn new things in an out of the box way.
The learning that takes place in our room supports and extends what takes place in their regular classroom in a project based environment. We spend most of our time working together in cooperative groups.
My kiddos are highly motivated and they love to learn new things. They are full of questions and enjoy investigating the answers to their questions. My goal is to continue to foster their love and excitement for learning!
My Project
In our gifted classroom, we try to plan projects that foster artistic creativity. Each week our goal is to complete at least one art project tied to our unit of study. So far this year, we have created a crayon resist tide pool, modeled a collage of a kelp forest after work by Henri Matisse and have worked together to plan and create a giant mural of a coral reef for our wall. The Crayola Paint and Markers, as well as the construction paper, scissors and glue allows my students to work to their potential.
My students come from a diverse background and have become very frustrated with the lack of art materials that match their skin color.
These multicultural markers and construction paper will help all my students feel equally represented and will help us continue to let our creativity shine all year long!
