My students need a group set of MP3 players and headphones to help them with their reading skills, math skills, as well as their acquisition of the English language.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember the good old listening centers with tape players? Sure, we thought they were cool, but this is the 21st century folks, and MP3 players are the way to go!
ALL my students have the ability, drive, and desire to learn, but the challenges of their personal lives sometimes puts a roadblock in their way.
The meals my students receive at school are oftentimes the only meals they have each day, not to mention the fact that I might be their only adult interaction. In addition to the challenges mentioned, they are also all English language learners. Seeing their faces light up each time that they've gained new knowledge, read a few more words on their weekly fluencies (timed reading tests), or passed the next level of multiplication facts, makes me realize how much they value their education, and how lucky I am to be their teacher.
My Project
Remember that tape player I mentioned at the beginning? Do you also remember all the cool ways your teacher used it in centers in your classroom? Maybe your teacher used it for a book on tape, or math fact practice, or even putting the week's spelling test on it. It was "different" and it held our attention, unless, of course, we were the "bluebird" in the group (and got bored with the slow pace), or the poor "buzzard" in the group (and was frustrated with the fast pace). Imagine how powerful it would be for students to be able to listen to ANY story they wanted, or practice whatever level of math fact they were on, or even have the ability to PAUSE the spelling test or repeat the last word, in order to feel successful!!!
My students realize that practice leads to near perfection, but they are all at different levels.
Giving them the opportunity to go at their own pace would EMPOWER them and EXCITE them to push themselves (all at the same time, looking pretty darn "cool!")! It would also allow me to have that time to work with small groups and individual students who need that "extra" help. This project would not only help my students this year, but those in the years to come.
