Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a variety of special needs students. They are excited to learn and be engaged in books as well as the learning environment. The students who have autism have a communication barrier, for some do not speak. I want to make ways available to them to be "heard" and understood.
My special needs students are enthused to learn and yet are held back in communicating their wants and needs with their peers and adults.
I've seen students get frustrated when they are not understood. Communication barriers can hinder their education and I would like to find a way to overcome that for their success.
My Project
My special needs students can struggle with everyday simple requests. I see frustration upon their faces when I am not able to understand their wants and needs. I want to give them ways at school and at home to be able to be "heard", to be able to say "I need to go to the bathroom," or "I'm hungry." The Tiny Talker will be a wonderful way to introduce augmentative and alternative communication device to the students and their families. I want the students to feel heard and be able to express themselves.
One way to keep my students engaged in reading books is to be able to participate in the dialogue by using recordable buzzers!
If we are reading the Three Little Pigs, I will have recorded on the buzzers, "I will huff and puff and blow your house down!" When we get to that part of the book the students will be able to hit the buzzer and be engage in the story. It's fun to see their faces light up when they get be apart of the story. I strongly feel that these special children need to let their voices be heard!
