Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Whenever I tell people I teach middle school, the first reaction is usually something like "How can you stand it?" or "Wow, that must be tough!" with the occasional "Oh, God bless you!" thrown in. I used to feel the same way until I met my first group of seventh and eighth graders. They are the best! Yes, sometimes the hormones go into overdrive, but my students are hysterically fun, have a great desire to learn and are old enough to understand and discuss interesting topics.
This year, I've changed schools, and I look forward to building a space where my new students feel safe and challenged to become their best selves!
While my students don't all share the same culture, most share an economic status. All of our student body receives free breakfast and lunch. Despite all of the challenges that they face, my students come to school willing and eager to learn. They have great plans, hopes and dreams for the future. They are funny and bright and I consider myself lucky to be their teacher.
My Project
In my classroom, we have some great technology, but we are missing vital pieces to access it. We have a SmartBoard projector, but the lamp with in it is no longer working. We have Kindles for reading and listening to books, but no headphones to use them without bothering our neighbors. We have access to the internet, but can't print what we find while we are researching. With just some small additions, we could make the technology a much bigger part of our day.
With a new SmartBoard lamp, we can learn collaboratively, share work, learn through multimedia outlets and more.
With headphones and splitters, kids could listen to audiobooks or educational videos together. With a printer, we could create amazing displays and collaborative learning pieces more effectively. My kids would be more engaged in their learning and more amazing educational opportunities could be seized upon. Thank you for your help in getting my kids working technology in the classroom.
