Imagine moving to a new country and starting school! You walk into a classroom with many other children who may or may not speak your language. These are the students I teach every day. I need to make learning as concrete as possible for them.
Many of my students have very limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting.
We move from learning letters and numbers to reading and adding very quickly. Hoping they catch everything including a new language. My students have come from all around the world, from many different and often difficult situations. It is my goal to give them as many tools to ensure as much success as possible.
We all know the best learning happens when children play and discover on their own. I want my students to experience this type of learning in our structured environment. Learning today is no comparison to learning back in 1999! No more "Turn to page 101 and do # 1-12"! Now we are competing with PlayStation and Xbox! Students loose focus quickly!
Student need rich color and high interest materials to retain what they consider to be unimportant!
They need to understand numbers and number concepts to master addition and subtraction. At 5 years old, they don't care about math and even more don't understand it's importance. However, using the Count & Sort oven to match number to quantity is more fun!
