This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children in families with incomes below the poverty line are less likely to be read to aloud every day than are children in families with incomes at or above poverty. This is a sad fact. Our school is made up of over 500 students, and unfortunately, almost all of our students fall into this category.

Reading is a pleasure that is often overlooked for lack of a good book and a cozy spot to read.

Our kids come to school every day eager to learn. Sadly, they don't have the proper resources at home to help them become better readers and to build a foundation for a love of reading. Because of this, our school struggles with getting our reluctant readers into reading. Hopefully, our project will change this.

My Project

Have you ever heard a child say "I can't find my journal!" or "I don't know where my book is?" These are scenarios that play out all too often in many classrooms. Space is always an issue in our classrooms, and as teachers, we try to make use of every inch of space for learning. Having a bookcase to store our learning materials would make all the difference to my students.

During the course of the school day, my students use a wide variety of materials, often changing activities and materials frequently.

To help my students become readers, we use a lot of concrete manipulatives to help make connections to the letter names and sounds. Being able to touch, manipulate, and sort concrete objects and pictures helps to develop this skill for my students. Learning by doing involves my students in a total learning experience which enhances their ability to think critically. But, where can we store all of the materials we need to help us be better learners? It is very important that our classroom be arranged to promote efficient learning.
