Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very special to me because as a resource teacher, I get to work with them long enough to see their growth and needs over the years. My school is located in an inner-city, low social-economic community in California. About 80% of my students are also English Learners. My students all have some sort of mild to moderate disability which impacts their learning in a general education classroom.
In my resource class, we value cultural and linguistic diversity as we work on meeting individual student's learning needs and learning styles.
Given all the learning challenges my students face daily at home or at school, they still come to my resource room for academic support with unbeatable zeal, happy smile, and strong motivation to learn.
My Project
Since my students have their unique learning styles due to their individual disabilities, I use multi-modal instruction when I have the resources to help meet their individual learning needs.
While every student responds differently to different strategies, I find hands-on learning to be the most effective way for my students to understand the math concepts I teach them.
With the hand2mind Versa tiles math kit, my students will be able to learn the math concepts such as fractions and multiplication in a fun way, by physically doing the lessons instead of just hearing or seeing the lessons. This is especially beneficial for my kinesthetic learners who learn better when the learning involves hands-on activities and movement. For example, when my students with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder struggled to understand the concept of fractions, I taught them to use the fraction model manipulative and they were able to understand the equivalent fractions by physically putting together and taking apart the manipulative (slices of a pie) to make the fractions.
