Let Littles Listen to Literature with Mp3 Players and Headphones!
Help me give my students a chance to have an adult read to them one on one. That adult will come through 10 Mp3 players and 10 headphones, used as a listening center for audiobooks.
Kindergarten is such an exciting group of mixed abilities, interests and goals. My classroom is full of 25 active little bodies with smiling faces. They are eager to learn and ready to take on the world. The joy on their faces as they are learning to read is priceless. They love writing, art, and science just like any other kid.
For some of my students Kindergarten is their first venture outside of the home without parents but for others they have no home to go to.
I have students in the foster care system and others that are homeless. Our school is a 100% free and reduced breakfast and lunch school.
Kindergarten is a time to begin to explore the world around them. My students live in an isolated economically depressed community and have never had the opportunity to experience anything else. I want to be able to open up the rest of the world to them. I want them to have access to books, art, and museums.
My Project
Reading time has become a treasured part of my students day. Often students will pick it over games on the Ipad. During literacy stations daily, read to self is a choice. The Mp3 players with headphones would be used during that time. The Mp3 players would be loaded with audiobooks that had corresponding books so the student could follow along.
For many students, listening to the Mp3 player will be the only one on one time they will have in a day being read to.
Some of my students have parents who read with them daily, but many do not. It's not the same as having a person there but it's the next best thing. I wish I could say I got to read one on one with each of them every day but realistically I don't. I get to read with them in small group, but it is still not one on one with the story they choose.
By having multiple Mp3 players and headphones, multiple students could take advantage of the vast benefits of being read to one one one with a story they are interested in; increased vocabulary, better pronunciation, increased listening skills, and reading becoming multi-sensory.
