As a librarian in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am aiming to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Our library is the center of learning for our diverse population.
Our students visit the library often, for a variety of reasons, and I want to continue to serve them in all subject areas such as English, math, science, social studies, and robotics.
Our elementary school is a large, urban public school with almost five hundred students. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over seventy percent of our students receiving free lunch. The ethnic breakdown of the school is 39% white, 37% Hispanic, 14% black, and 8% Asian.
My Project
A makerspace is a collaborative work space inside a school, library or separate public/private facility for making, learning, exploring and sharing that uses high tech to no tech tools. A makerspace however doesn’t need to include all of these machines or even any of them to be considered a makerspace. If you have cardboard, Legos, and art supplies, you’re in business.
Makerspaces come in all shapes and sizes, but they all serve as a gathering point for tools, projects, mentors, and expertise.
Our library has a defined makerspace area. However, the space needs new and different supplies for the students. I am requesting play-doh, STEM kits, and Friendship bracelet kits to bring new and exciting activities for the students to make, learn, explore and share.
