My class is an amazing group of students who face many challenges. We are a rural, K-8 school, where every child receives a free breakfast and lunch. Most of my students live well below the poverty level, but you would never know it from their positive attitudes. They are just excited to come to school and learn.
My goal is to provide my students with a variety of teaching tools to foster engagement, confidence, and success.
Then we can learn our standards together through opportunities to collaborate, to be creative, and to learn twenty-first-century skills.
Reading is the most important thing we do every day in the classroom. But how many students get to choose books they really want to read?
Would you want every book you read to be chosen for you?
I sure wouldn't! When we study together as a class or small group, of course we use the same text, but when reading for pleasure we all want the opportunity to choose for ourselves.
Each year I ask my third grade students what books they would like to read. This year, they are really into silly humor, and fantastic magic kingdoms! These three series (Kingdom of Wrenly, Captain Awesome, and George Brown, Class Clown) fit the bill. My students will be reading these books during their reading workshop time, either alone or with a partner. They will also be taking them home to read.
Studies show that allowing kids to choose their own books will encourage them to love reading, and become lifelong learners. Thank you for helping me realize this goal!
