Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Exploration and creation! Have you watched as a child's eyes lit up when they discovered something amazing? Help my students discover the ways in which the sun can help us to become artists through photography. Through this creative process my students will learn how photography can tell a story.
My 1st grade students are amazing!
Despite many obstacles in their young lives, I see every day their love of learning, kind hearts and perseverance towards becoming their best. This year we are focusing on a goal of college and currently have many dreams. We are a Title I inner-city school in North Carolina. We are high-poverty with over 93% of our students receiving free/reduced lunch. Our students come from all over the world and include a high refugee population. Many of our students speak more than one language. Within our classroom we focus on community and family. We don't call ourselves a class but instead refer to one another as family. The culture within our room is one that emphasizes teamwork, collaboration and different learning styles. We love hands-on projects and exploration.
My Project
Through sun-sensitive photography paper, my students will learn about photography. The final goal of this project includes the creation of sun prints which will be turned into a creative story. We will then present our stories and will explain the "photographic process" of sun photography. We will first begin by integrating science into our project as we learn about the sun. We will learn how the sun can help us to become artists. Then, we will begin to brainstorm story ideas. Students will work in small groups to develop story ideas. Students will be able to choose their topic and can write any type of story including non-fiction, make-believe or narrative. Finally we will use our ideas to "illustrate" our books with photography. We will use items from our classroom and items from nature. Students will write and illustrate their stories. Our final presentation will include an author's celebration where we will invite parents and other classes to hear our stories.
These supplies will allow my class to become excited to learn about the sun, write stories and work with their peers.
The ability to express their thoughts through sun photography will allow them to learn an entirely new concept. Showcasing their work and having an author's celebration will empower my students as writers and learners. Inviting parents, other classes and community members to our day will allow my students to feel valued as book publishers.
