This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are special needs middle school age students on the Autism Spectrum. The students are at varies level of independence in self care and cognitive development. Ignacio Estrada said “If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”
I love that each student's learning style is so unique and that they approach every activity differently.
They are my Scientists, Technologist, Engineers, and Mathematician, they my investigators, tasters, testers, experimenters, artist, explorers.
My Project
This year I am excited to introduce my students and school to a new way of growing plants. We are requesting hydroponics and aquaponic systems which will show my students a different way that plants grow to provide food for their families and communities.
The hydroponic and aquaponic systems will also teach the kids a sense of responsibility, scheduling, pruning, sorting veggies, measuring water, pouring water, plant recognition, plant parts, and improve math skills.
More importantly all of these skills will transfer into their personal lives, giving them a stronger sense of independence; pouring their own drinks, measuring for a recipes, recognition of personal belongings, etc.
