My students need new books to replaced worn, damaged copies of Shared Reading books.
My classes are made up of artists, dancers, singers, actors, writers, scientists, mathematicians--all with a passion for learning. I enjoy being able to harness their energy into class discussions and writing.
Their insight is really what drives the classroom.
With this, our discussions often shed light on the multiplicity of backgrounds they are coming from and what they envision for the world. They speak up for themselves and others but also listen to each other. And so they continue to grow.
Last year, my classes really enjoyed reading these two novels. 8th grade tackled Maya Angelou's novel while 7th grade delved into Ji-Li Jiang's memoir. I would love to continue to expose my students to these books, however, our class sets are in dire need of some new books to replace to worn, damaged copies.
Literature (I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Red Scarf Girl A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution) that helps readers grow should be complex and open up new perspectives.
This, in turn, should open up lively discussions. The 2 novels requested in this project fall into this category of literature. Through the character's story, students were able to make connections with the text and with each other based on how they interpreted the text. I would love to continue to provide this opportunity to my students this year as well!
