My Students
My students are kindergarten through 5th graders in an urban school district with a heavy refugee and immigrant population. There are over 70 languages spoken in our school district. Our city has been hit hard by the unemployment crisis lately.
Even with these challenges, our students display such courage, dedication and fortitude. Our schools operate with less and less every year, meanwhile, the needs of our student population continue to increase.
The students are so joyful and hopeful. I want to give these students the same opportunities as those provided by surrounding school districts.
My Project
Supplying students with engaging and high interest books for home is fundamental and central to creating life long readers. And reading at home will not only turn these students into life long readers but will have benefits that reach far beyong the classroom and into our society, benefitting us all.
Reading improves literacy in all subjects. Research has shown us over and over that students who read leisurely tend to have higher test scores. I want to help my kindergarten to grade 5 students succeed in all areas of their eduction.
