My Students

At our school, we firmly believe that all children, no matter what their cognitive levels are, have the capacity to learn. Through this belief, we as teachers are constantly finding creative and new learning approaches to help our students be successful.

This year I will be working with 20 amazing 4 year old preschool students attending our full day preschool program.

These students are either attending preschool for the very first time or transitioning from half-day to full day. The students come from various cultural, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds which lends itself to a diverse classroom environment. The students also have different learning preferences whether it is visual, kinesthetic or auditory. Regardless of their backgrounds and their learning preference, all of the students are eager to learn and explore their world around them. My goal is to give them as many tools as possible to become active and engaged learners.

My Project

My students would benefit from the ability to check out books from a classroom lending library. Many of the mini-libraries I am requesting directly tie into the studies we will be participating in this coming school year. For example, one unit of study is all about families. The All About Me and Families mini-library sets will help reinforce this topic. Another study we will be working on this school year revolves around construction and building. The STEM library I have requested will have the students activate their knowledge from working on the unit to problem solve within the stories.

Creating a lending library for the students will not only help promote literacy, but I believe will also help foster the relationships between the students and their caregivers.

Reading one or two stories even before bed at night has a profound positive effect on language acquisition as well as helping to foster a love of reading. Having the students check out and bring home books they are truly interested in well encourage parent engagement as well as allowing time for both child and parent or caregiver to disconnect from technology and enjoy some quality time together.

Outside of the books I am requesting, I am also requesting book totes for all of my students in order to encourage them to check out books weekly. I have also asked for library cards and pocket card holders so the students can not only check out the books but practice writing their names as well. I believe that by establishing this lending library I will encourage positive engagement between the parents/caregivers and the students as well as provide a great school to home connection by tieing the books to our units of study.
