Our school is in an urban area in Virginia. We take pride in being the most diverse elementary school in our district and represent about 30 different languages that are spoken by our students. Our students and teachers love books and make reading a special part of each day. Along with motivating our students to read books they enjoy, our teachers are always working to increase our students' academic achievement and social-emotional skills. We are proud of our school community!
My Project
Leland Melvin is a native Virginian who took education and sports seriously, played football in the NFL, and worked at NASA. He was able to use his work at NASA to become an astronaut and actually go into space. He has written a book about his perseverance and passion throughout his childhood that helped him to be successful. For part of the Virginia Festival of the Book, he will be coming to Charlottesville to tell his story and share his work with our fifth grade students. His presentation will be much more meaningful if they have the opportunity to read his book first!
