Our early learners will participate in a Leisure Listening Program, Grades PreK-2, approximately 240 children. Students will engage daily in the classroom's Listening Activity Center. Audio tapes to support our struggling readers, aligned with early literacy student books focusing on fiction, nonfiction, myths and tales will be used to integrate comprehension strategies and promote student engagement. Our primary students PreK-2 need to focus on phonemic awareness, fluency, phonics, comprehension and vocabulary in order to succeed academically. This activity will build reading stamina and boost comprehension and vocabulary. The early years are crucial if students are to become life-long learners. Lawndale Community Academy is located on the westside of Chicago in a neighborhood known as North Lawndale, which is characterized as one of the most deprived communities in Chicago. North Lawndale has a high crime rate and is plagued with gangs, drugs and violent crimes. The materials needed will be sets of cassette tapes with student books-Levels PreK-2,tape players and headphones. Our school budget only has enough money for standard textbooks, workbooks and library books. Lost textbooks are a common occurence at Lawndale and must be replaced each year. Teachers rarely have any or enough listening books with audiocassette tapes to reinforce reading literacy and comprehension. Our school is on academic probation. Students who are not on level in the primary grades rarely catch up.
