Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves a small working community. A community that models the importance of school, learning, and establishing high academic and behavioral standards. My students enter the classroom each morning smiling and motivated to learn!
It is clear that our students reflect the strong values of their families and know the importance of education.
They are responsible, respectful and ready to learn. Our classroom is a place where in addition to learning the core curriculum, my students are learning 21st century skills such as collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving. These kiddos give me great hope for our future!
My Project
Second graders love Science, but they love LEGOs and even more! The Lego WeDo Core Set 2.0 is the perfect tool to get my students highly motivated about their learning. Students will work in teams during STEM hour to turn their ideas into real models that can be touched, described, and innovated upon. Lessons with the Lego WeDo 2.0 kits touch on Coding, Engineering and STEM.
My second grade students today are tomorrow’s creative problem-solvers.
Legos naturally lead children to be creative, but the programmable component of the WeDo 2.0 takes Legos to the next level! Possible lessons would ask students to explore the effect of road construction on animals and plants in various habitats, then create and program a device to allow animals to cross hazardous areas. Students would collaborate with each other and document their work along the way. Or they might create a simple robotic device and learn basic coding by programming it to work at different speeds.
Having these hands-on materials will encourage my students to become an active part of the learning process. I am so excited to see what WeDo together!
