I teach 5th grade in an elementary school just outside of Denver, Colorado. I work in an extremely diverse school with students speaking over 40 different languages. I currently have 5 different languages in my classroom and even more cultural backgrounds.
I am extremely lucky to work with such a cool group of kids that I can learn so much from.
75% of the students in my school qualify for free or reduced lunch and I feel that these kids deserve great resources and materials!
This year in 5th grade we will be doing a genius hour where students have the opportunity to research something they are passionate about and create (or build) something to show their learning. I would love to add Legos to our supplies. A few students gave me the idea because they want to test different structures. Tests may involve ideas such as how much weight a structure can hold or how tall the structure can be.
I plan to use the Legos in science and math throughout the year as well.
Legos are hands on and help students to visualize number models. I look forward to finding more uses throughout the year!
