My second-grade students are, on average, 84 months old! When you consider that for approximately 1/3 of that time they were only babies, it seems incredible to hear that they are almost too late for early academic interventions, but they are!
Early intervention in reading, writing, and mathematics is crucial for children suffering from the effects of economic disadvantage and/or traumatic childhood events which is the case for many of my students.
Our district is in a high poverty area and almost all of my students qualify for federal lunch program funding.
At the beginning of the school year reading assessments, 2/3 of my class scored in the non-reader range! It is critical that they receive no intervention now so they may quickly acquire the building block reading skills that are the foundation for future content knowledge acquisition.
My Project
This project is designed to get LEGO sets into my 2nd graders' homes and hands. I can make copies of the build directions and my students can continue their favorite learning activity at home. I know that giving them educational tasks they love will get them going and help support everything they have worked so hard to learn this year. I can’t believe I may not get to see my class together again this year. My heart is breaking and I am so worried for my kids, many of whom live in difficult economic circumstances that will endanger their ability to stay housed during this health crisis.
