My students need Legos for a writing center. Building bricks and mini figures are the perfect way to “hook” and engage writers by allowing them to plan and visualize stories in a hands-on way.
I teach a group of 26 enthusiastic public school 3rd graders who live in a suburban neighborhood of California.
They have varying abilities and learning styles, along with specific educational needs.
What makes them all similar is their sense of wonder, their curious nature and their quest to explore their world. They are constantly asking "How?" and "Why?" and they live in a constant state of wide eyed wonderment. I have the privilege and joy of working with them on a daily basis.
My Project
Third graders will always benefit from activities where they can lay their hands on materials, manipulate them, and create with them, the outcome of which is not only a greater understanding of scholastic concepts but also a JOY for learning! The materials I have requested will be used to create stories based on different genres of writing, from narrative fiction to mysteries to non-fiction.
LEGOs will be used to create an inspired story setting, complete with LEGO characters, food, setting, and vehicles.
From there the student will write their story and publish it using a variety of options, from the traditional to using technology. The base plates, characters and tools provided by this project will create the opportunity for a writing place where stories can be explored and inspired by one of their favorite toys. Now that is "out of the box" learning!!
