LEGO Sets Used to Build Social and Communication Skills
Help me give my students LEGO kits such as Cafe, Community Starter Set, STEAM Park, StoryTales, and Build Me Emotions to increase their social, fine motor, and communication skills.
Our classroom is involved in the Autism Initiative Verbal Behavior Program. The eight autistic students in my class have a wide range of needs that are addressed individually in one-on-one intensive teaching sessions and through direct instruction in a small group setting.
The students in my class have a wide range of interests, academic skills, and social skills.
My students perform best with hands-on materials and visuals. Engagement is at its peak when the students are having fun. Variable reinforcement centered around the senses (scents to smell, items to touch, edibles to eat, sounds to hear, and use of movements) are used throughout the day to keep students motivated and working at a good rate.
My Project
The students in my classroom have social and communication deficits. These needs are addressed in individual or peer to peer manding (requesting) sessions. Having high-interest materials is essential in improving these skills. In order for the students to mand (request) for these items, they have to have an interest and be motivated to ask for them. The Cafe LEGO sets have many pieces to construct food items. Menu and recipe cards are included, which will be perfect for role-playing restaurant and grocery store scenes. My students will be able to grow their communication skills with the StoryTales LEGO kit. The kit has everything needed to create a story setting with characters. By working with their peers, my students will be able to explore ways to create moving rides and fun games with the STEAM Park LEGO kit. All of the LEGO kits have teacher guides that show various ways of using the materials. These LEGO kits are sure to spark conversations among my students!
