We are a Title I school serving many students who live in low-income areas with all students receiving free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students themselves and/or their parents are immigrants from other countries and English may not be their first or primary language. However they are described, my students are still children who want to feel loved, respected, and accomplished.
My students are enthusiastic and very starved to see their teachers and friends.
I believe they also really miss the process of learning and actually learning. After Spring Break, our school district was closed due to the COVID-19 virus for the rest of the school year. Our school has currently been providing printed "distance learning packets" which is going as well as we could hope, with many students picking up the packets, completing them, and turning them in. I would like to request distance learning supplies to communicate with them online.
I want to create an online classroom where students will be highly interested in visiting, not just because it's requested, but because it's exciting for them. Lego sets are great for distance learning. These sets will be constructed by myself and video recorded for students to view online. When school resumes, they will be able to construct the sets again themselves.
Lego sets can be a great teaching tool because they can be constructed and deconstructed endlessly.
In STEM class we are learning about design of buildings and the world around the students while not in school. My goal is to be able to livestream myself constructing these Lego sets while being able to interact with my students online. When school resumes next year, these sets can be taken apart and the students themselves can construct them. Lego sets are always very engaging for students. These architecture sets fall inline with exactly what we are distance learning (design for functionality and aesthetics) and will be in high demand once traditional school resumes!
I am requesting 2 architecture sets and 1 space set for students to learn about design and stay highly motived and interested in STEM.
