Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a small neighborhood school whose distinction in the school district is that our population is high poverty, low achieving, majority Latino, and at risk youth. My position is as the Gifted and Talented Teacher and Community Liaison. I teach students K-5. However my practice has been to combine both Gifted students with our general population to compete as a team in the FIRST Lego Robotics Competition here in our town. These students have worked diligently in the past 4 years and made enormous strides in their school work and their robotics program. Our team this year is comprised of 15 students, 4 are Gifted, 6 are girls, and all but 3 are Latino.
We have worked with our school district's Impact on Education Grants for the past 4 years to be able to compete in the FIRST Lego Robotics program. However, this year funding is not available for this program. Last year we limited our team to 5 students and did not compete in the project portion of the competition. This year we expanded our team to 15 and want so much to be able to produce both a tremendous game playing robot as well as a powerful project presentation. The project this year centers on Mobility/Transportation and we are putting together our project and need more space to be able to both program our robot and use the laptops to create the presentation.
We thought it would be great to be able to put our robots and laptops on a mobile cart for ease of access and make it more accessible to the group. A cart would allow us to keep all of our "stuff" together on an movable cart that can be plugged in. Our robots and laptops need to be recharged after each use.
Your help will ensure that our students have access to materials to make their projects this year and for years to come something to be proud of.
