Help me give my students a hands-on coding activity that will challenge them, bring them together, and prepare them for their technology-based futures!
Several hard-working groups of fourth-grade students pass through my room each day. Our leveled classes allow me to interact with concentrated groups of students based on their need to build specific skills. Though they are placed strategically by need, the diversity within the classroom is ever-changing. I teach nearly as many homeless, low-income, and special needs students as I do well-provided-for students.
In a perfect world, students would be furnished with the most up-to-date, efficient, and engaging technologies no matter the cost; but in the real world, cost does matter.
All of these students are enthusiastic learners. They deserve the best materials, opportunities, and learning environments to help them strive in the classroom, and in turn, succeed in their own adult lives.
My Project
Between my three classes, I have many challenge-seeking individuals who love to complete difficult tasks that make them really think. This is especially true for tasks that involve being creative and not just following a set of directions with no variation.
To give these students additional opportunities to challenge their brains and provide an incentive for excellent behavior, a LEGO coding robot kit would be an ideal option in my classroom.
Students would also gain practice with working on a difficult task over a longer period of time, which is something students nowadays tend to find difficult as it requires that they recall and review information from a time not immediately preceding the completion of the task. Patience and perseverance are fading, and this could definitely help bring them back!
