Every class has THOSE kids--the ones who can’t sit still, and can’t listen and can’t stop fiddling with things and can’t stop hearing “can’t” and “stop” all day long. I have those kids. I love those kids. They don’t think like other kids and they make the coolest cannons and intricate trebuchets out of pencils, paperclips, and slips of paper. We’re a Title I school and need to focus on basics during the day, but our clubs are the reason kids come to school. I gathered the blacklist of “those kids,” children with learning difficulties for various reasons--special needs, unstable homes, holes in their education, boredom, the intense feeling that they’re stupid for not being able to “get it” like other kids do--who needed something different and ASKED them what they’d like to do.
They wanted to build, to work on a team, to feel good about themselves, to solve problems using their hands more than a pencil...they were willing to try anything.
So, my 4th-8th graders in our tiny Arizona town are ready for a change. I can’t wait to find out what THOSE kids can do!
My Project
We're almost there. Our fledgling LEGO League team requests help funding our Lego robot set, EV3 Mindstorm. This will mean we can finally move from creating simple machines to crafting electronics.
With our set, we will connect our wheels to wires and start coding.
We'll still be in the hallway racing our creations, but now we'll be able to program our little robot to do specific tasks. We can spend our first year learning how to build together, problem solve, and create amazing projects.
As new members of the outstanding FIRST LEGO League program, we are so excited to begin this journey.
DonorsChoose is the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
