Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a school where 85% of students receive free or reduced lunch. My students are aged 3-5 years old and all have Individualized Education Plans. My students are curious, full of energy and life and always eager to learn! They love learning new skills and are proud of their own successes and those of their peers. My ultimate goal is to give my students a positive learning experience in a school setting, setting the foundation for a love of learning and a love of school. Students learn best through hands-on experiences and through the process rather than always have to produce a product. We are a classroom family learning patience, empathy, and acceptance for everyone.

My Project

My special education students need a LEGO STEAM Park, LEGO Tube & Experiment set, LEGO Our Town set and Creative LEGO Bricks to increase their language and vocabulary, fine motor skills, problem solving and positive peer interactions. I’d love to provide my littlest learners hands-on building materials for opportunities to build and construct, cause and effect, creativity and socialization.

My pre-k students are working on increasing language and vocabulary skills, becoming problem solvers and critical thinkers, and learning how to engage in positive social interactions with peers.

LEGO will allow my students access to materials that are age appropriate, easy to use and encourage students to talk about their structures, actions, use words to request objects, describe shapes and colors, and to make predictions. Many of my students have delayed fine motor skills and by having LEGO available to manipulate, they can work on these skills that will help with their ability to hold writing tools when they are ready. Students will build and construct structures, people and more by using the small muscles in their hands while having fun exploring LEGO kits.

Students will work on science, technology, engineering, art and math through hands-on explorations. Students can make predictions about their structures, learn about cause and effect, test projects in the science area with push and pull, weight and measurement, or float and sink. Students will use counting and estimating with their blocks and use their creativity to design endless structures.

LEGO will allow my pre-K students opportunities to work with partners or small groups in positive peer interactions, sharing materials, having back and forth conversations, engage in dramatic play and peer collaborations. This project will encourage my students to be critical thinkers, be interested in engineering and technology as well as showcasing their creativity with their LEGO creations.
